ABTRACT: Knowledge disclosure is regarded as crucial for cumulative innovation, technological progress and social welfare. In addition, it is also an important dimension concerning firm’s innovation strategies. However, there is still limited empirical evidence on the impact of disclosure on follow-on inventions. We address this gap and exploit a policy change in the US patent legislation (“American Inventors Protection Act”), which had an impact on the disclosure timing of patent documents. Applying a difference-in-difference methodology, we analyze how “early” disclosure affects the diffusion of knowledge with regard to the geographical dimension. Relying on patent citation data to approximate knowledge flows, our econometric analysis suggests that early disclosure is particularly valuable for geographically distant inventors.
